How To Search Jackson County Arrest Records & Mugshots for Free

If you have general identifying information about a person and want to learn about a person’s incarceration status, you can perform a county-wide search of Jackson County jail records.

Searching arrest records and a jail roster at the county level provides you with the broadest search, covering individuals residing in multiple cities throughout Jackson County. At the county level, you can use an online search tool to access information quickly about a person’s arrest record.

However, you may need to obtain police reports or other detailed information not provided at the county level. At this point, you could search with local city police departments within Jackson County. Of course, to do this, it is helpful to have certain information, such as the arresting agency or where the offense took place, so you know where to conduct your search.

Searches with specific police departments are also helpful if you need a recent arrest report for someone just taken into custody. Often, if a person is just taken into custody, the only agency that will have information on the person is the police department that executed the arrest.

How To Check Criminal Cases in Jackson County Missouri

You can perform a free criminal record check to get a complete picture of charges brought against a person. Accessing a criminal record will allow a person to see if someone has any convictions and get additional information that is not usually available by searching arrest and inmate records.

Public criminal records contain the entire history of a case brought against a person. A searcher can access arrest information and see if a person was convicted of the charges brought against them.

Criminal records contain various information, such as warrants issued, court hearings, and sentencing data. Using criminal records, you can find out if a person is incarcerated or on probation, as well as other useful information.

Criminal records can be accessed in different ways. Below are tools and resources for searching Jackson County judicial records and more for criminal history information.

Find Jackson County Criminal Records Through the Missouri Courts Unified Search Tool

You can use the Missouri Courts Unified Search Tool to perform a free public records search of criminal records in Jackson County. You can use this search tool to search for individual criminal records by a person’s name, filing date or case number. Since this is a unified search tool for court records throughout Missouri, you will have to take a couple of steps to tailor your search results.

A screenshot of the search tool to search for individual's criminal data by a person's name, filing date or case number.
Source: Missouri Courts9

The first step a searcher will take is to select the correct court. Under the first drop-down box (“Search for cases in”), select Jackson County’s 16th Judicial Circuit Court. If you want to narrow your search further, you can also select a particular court in Jackson County at the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page labeled “Location.”

Next, under case type, select “Criminal.” From there, the only required information a searcher must enter is the person’s last name.

Optional information you can include in your search includes the person’s full name, any aliases, and the year the case was filed. You can also narrow your results by searching for pending or disposed cases.

The summary search results will provide information on the type of case and where and when the case was filed. You can click on the case number to view a person’s detailed criminal record.

The complete criminal record consists of several sections separated into different tabs. Here is a brief summary of helpful information you can find in each of these sections:

Case Header – This section contains basic case information, including the judge and the date the case was finally resolved.

Parties & Attorneys – Address and contact information for the defendant and any attorneys involved in the case.

Docket Entries – Provides you with a chronological order of every event that has happened in a case so far. A searcher can even filter this selection to view pending motions in the criminal case.

Charges, Judgments & Sentences – Details the specific crimes a person was convicted of, along with the sentence resulting from their conviction.

There are other helpful sections, depending on what you are searching a particular criminal record for. For instance, you can view scheduled hearings, court dates, and when any filings are due in a criminal case.

Another way to look up someone’s criminal record is by searching for court records in person. Criminal cases in Jackson County are primarily handled at the Albert Riederer Community Justice Complex. However, you can also gather criminal record information at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse.

How To Perform a Jackson County Background Check for Any Reason

You can seek a background check in Jackson County for many different reasons. Often, people are looking for a way to learn more about a person, whether it be a neighbor, friend, or family member.

In these instances, a person can perform a personal background check. This is an informal way to gather information about a person, as has been detailed in this article thus far.

However, there are certain situations in which a professional background check is needed. A professional background check is needed in a variety of situations required by state law (e.g., working with the elderly or children) or federal law (e.g., security clearances). A professional background check is also often needed in situations when you are applying for a specific right (e.g., firearm license, adoption) or when being screened for truthfulness (e.g., employment or tenant application).

Background checks can vary in scope and can be limited to a specific city or a search of criminal and other records throughout the United States. Background checks can also vary in depth from a name-based search to a fingerprint-based search.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office provides a criminal record check for a $2.00 fee.12 However, the record check is limited to records with the Sheriff’s Office and is not considered a formal background check.

You can get a background check in Jackson County through the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The CJIS Division is the central repository for all criminal records throughout the state. The MSHP provides criminal background checks through their Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS).13

There are two options for receiving a background check through MACHS.

First, MACHS provides a  Name Search Portal. This online portal can be used by anyone to conduct a name-based background check. To perform a background check, you will need to provide the person’s name as well as either their date of birth or Social Security Number (SSN). The cost is $15.00 per person searched, and you are required to register for an account first.

If you have additional questions, you can view the MACHS Name Search Portal FAQ.

Second, MACHS also provides a fingerprint search portal. This provides a more thorough and specific search. The processing fee for a Missouri background check is $20.00, and an FBI nationwide search is $13.25.

For additional information and questions, you can access their MACHS Fingerprint Portal FAQ.

You can also obtain background check reports at the city level in some instances. The Grain Valley Police Department is an example of when you can get a background check locally. It is important to note that background check reports performed at the city level are typically limited to records produced by that particular agency.

Note: Use of Jackson County public records, especially those obtained from a professional background check, comes with various rules and requirements. These will be discussed in detail in the final section of this article.

Citizens’ Rights & Responsibilities Pertaining to Jackson County Public Records

Now that you have a thorough understanding of how to search public records, you need to understand the rules and responsibilities that come with access to this information. Responsible use of public records is an ethical, moral and legal responsibility for anyone accessing them. However, the level of responsibility will vary depending on the manner in which the public records are being used.

If you are just using public records for personal use, your responsibilities are fairly straightforward. Start by confirming that you are only using the records for personal reasons and not for any type of business or legal reason.

Remember, personal use is defined not by how you got the information but by what you are using it for. So, a person cannot conduct informal searches online and then use it as part of a background check for a person’s employment or rental application.

Once you confirm that the public records are being used for personal use, the sole requirement is to make sure you do not use these records for any type of criminal activity. Beyond that, you are free to proceed with using the public records however you want. In fact, consent is not even required prior to searching a person’s public records.

For professional use, there are agencies and laws that govern how the information is received, used, and disseminated. If you are going to use public records, before you do anything, make sure you have the person’s written consent. Failure to do so could land you in trouble if the person reports it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).23

Once you have consent, your responsibilities do not end there. Professional use requires that information obtained from these public records not be used in certain discriminatory ways. If this occurs, it can result in a person filing a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).24

If the public records include consumer information, there are additional requirements mandated through the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).25 These requirements include, among other things, letting the person know what is in their file and if information was used against them. In addition, a person can dispute information they believe to be inaccurate or incomplete.

Understanding your rights and responsibilities when using public records is vital. Now that you understand your responsibility, you are equipped with everything you need to begin searching and using Jackson County public records.
